How it works

Discord has no color picker for text, but it does color code blocks marked as ansi. By inserting ANSI escape codes you can make words red, green, yellow, blue, pink, cyan, and more, with optional background colors, bold, and underline.

Add pieces of text, style each one, and copy the finished code block. Paste it straight into Discord.

Colored ANSI blocks show on Discord desktop and web. On some mobile versions they appear as plain text, so don’t rely on color alone to carry meaning.

Questions

Why does my colored text show strange characters?
The block must start with ```ansi and the escape character must be copied exactly. Use the copy button here instead of retyping it.
Does this work on mobile?
Support on mobile has varied over time. On devices that don’t support it, the text shows uncolored but readable.
Can bots send colored text?
Yes. Bots can send the same ansi code blocks in messages and embeds.
